The period: Chinese silk was shipped from Luoyang and Chang'an to Central Asia, passing through Turpan, then Samarkand, Raghae (a city of the Parthian Empire), and finally Dura-Europos, on to Damascus and the port of Tyre.
The Romans and the Chinese were aware of each other's existence, but this awareness was limited, and each empire had very vague knowledge of the other's affairs.
The Parthians tried to deter the Chinese from crossing in order to maintain control of the trade in goods coming from the Middle Kingdom.
The Roman Wars of Conquest in the Middle East ended around 53 BC with the Roman defeat at the Battle of Carrhae against the Parthians.
From 51 BC onward, the Parthians launched a series of raids into Roman Syria. The Carrhae region remained under Parthian rule for decades.
