Summary of the previous Part: Caesar has just crossed the Rubicon River with one of his legions. He has just violated a Roman law that forbade a general from crossing this river with armed soldiers.
This law was intended to protect Rome from internal military threats.
While Pompey had gathered in his palace in Rome the two consuls of the Roman Senate, Marcellus and Lentulus, his friend Senator Cato, and General Titus Labienus, a former general of Caesar who had aligned himself with Pompey, to find a way to arrest Julius Caesar and his supporters, he learned from a messenger that Caesar was approaching Rome with this legion.
Immediately, an extraordinary meeting was held with all the senators and governors of the Roman Senate. Pompey decided to bring up two legions from southern Italy and to mobilize other legions from across the Republic. These would arrive from Hispania, the East, and Africa.
A few days later, General Labienus informed Pompey that Caesar's legion was encountering no resistance and that the northern cities had rallied to Caesar. His army would be in Rome in two days.
The two relief legions that set out from southern Italy will arrive too late...
Pompey decides to leave with the two consuls and several senators for the city of Capua in southern Italy to organize a counterattack against Caesar.
