Summary of the previous part: Julius Caesar marched on Rome with the XIII Legion after crossing the Rubicon River, which until then had been the border that no Roman legion was allowed to cross.
Seized by panic, Pompey set off with the two Roman consuls, some senators, and General Titus Labienus, who had joined his forces. They headed towards the city of Capua in southern Italy.
However, faced with Julius Caesar's rapid advance, Pompey abandoned the idea of raising more legions in Italy and instead sought them in the East.
After several setbacks against Julius Caesar in Illyria and Africa, Pompey was urged by his supporters to fight Caesar in open terrain, with fresh troops, near the city of Pharsalus in Thessaly, at the end of July 48 BC.
Julius Caesar went there with eight legions, approximately 22,000 men and 1,800 cavalry. But Pompey had 11 legions, comprising 45,000 men and 7,000 cavalry.
Will Pompey regain the upper hand against Julius Caesar?
