Summary of the previous part: Heated debates have just taken place in the Roman Senate: Pompey and his allies want Caesar's supporters and Caesar himself declared "public enemies of the Republic."
The day after these debates, the Roman Senate will decide on a "SENATUS CONSULTUM ULTIMUM" against Caesar. This is a final decree from the Senate that allows it to temporarily grant all power to a designated person. In this case, it will be Pompey who will have Roman dictatorial powers, that is to say, absolute power for a period of six months.
Meanwhile, Julius Caesar's Thirteenth Roman Legion, commanded by Gaius Gracchus, has arrived in northern Italy, at the Rubicon River. This river serves as the border between Italy and the province of Cisalpine Gaul. A Roman law forbids any Roman army from crossing it.
Julius Caesar arrived the following morning and decided to cross the river, followed by his Legion.
They are heading down towards Rome...
