Summary of the previous part: The third Gallic assault is the right one. Thanks to the besieged Gauls of Alesia, the Gallic Rescue Army has managed to invade the main access gate to the fortifications.
Indeed, having attacked all the ramparts of the Roman fortifications simultaneously, the Romans no longer know where to turn.
Vercingetorix has managed to knock down a panel of the rampart and enter.
His cousin VERCASSIVELLAUNUS, who is part of the Gallic Rescue Army, has managed, with his men, to capture the outer ramparts and surprise Julius Caesar and General GRACCUS.
They are both trapped, along with Julius Caesar's Personal Guard, in the midst of the Gauls approaching from all sides.
For Julius Caesar, the situation is terrible...
Consequences: The defeat at Alesia and the capture of Vercingetorix marked the end of organized resistance to Caesar's campaigns and constituted a climax in the Caesarian narrative.
At that time, the latter commanded a strong and experienced army, valuable allies, and colossal booty, including slaves and riches plundered throughout six years of war.
Flooded with glory, he turned to northern Italy to station his troops with a view to returning to Rome to ratify the measures taken during his conquest, secure the installation of his veterans, and secure a triumph for his victory.
However, Caesar's rise to power had rekindled considerable tensions in Rome, fueled in particular by those loyal to the conqueror of Gaul on the one hand, and armed bands led by supporters of Pompey and the aristocratic party.
The latter sought to catch Caesar out for the irregularities of his commands and the extensions of his mandate during the closing decade.
Declared a public enemy by the Senate in the winter of 50-49 BC, Caesar crossed the Rubicon to defend his interests and triggered what would become Rome's second civil war, pitting him against Pompey.
For his part, Vercingetorix, a captive, was incarcerated for six years in the Mamertine prison and probably executed after his conqueror's triumph in 46 BC, following an uninterrupted series of victories over Pompey, his supporters, Egypt, and Asia.
