CAESAR The Serie - Season 1 - Episode 1 - English Version

This story is inspired by true events that took place during the Gallic Wars between Julius Caesar and the Gallic leader Vercingetorix. 

 

- Episode 1: The Siege of AVARIC -

 

 Context of the time: During the Gallic Wars, Vercingetorix practiced a scorched earth policy: no town or farm was to be used to supply the Roman legions.  

However, the inhabitants of Avaric, capital of the Bituriges Cubes, begged Vercingetorix to spare their city, citing the safety of their city, protected by natural defenses (located on a hill surrounded by a river and marshes) and a powerful wall to the south. He agreed. 

 Julius Caesar understood the trap Vercingetorix was trying to set him and decided to besiege the city so he could continue his battles. 

Otherwise, he would be forced to return to Rome, and therefore admit to having lost the Gallic Wars.

- Episode 1: The Siege of AVARIC -

Summary of the previous part: The Romans managed to enter AVARIC through a hole they had blasted in the city walls with a battering ram. 

After fighting on the walls and around the city's main gate, they succeeded in opening it... 

The Roman cavalry immediately set out to enter AVARIC... 

 Meanwhile, Bourgix, the city's leader, seeing that AVARIC was in danger of falling, gave the order for the women, children, and the elderly to flee the city...

 

Consequences in the History of the Gallic Wars 

 of this Capture of the City by the Romans 

 

 In fact, as reported in Julius Caesar's War Journal, after several days of failure, the Romans took advantage of the bad weather and managed to enter and capture the city. 

 The city's inhabitants chose to flee, but were massacred at the gates by the legionaries who seized the square and by the cavalry that remained on the outskirts of the city. 

At the end of the siege, the city's population was massacred; Caesar declared: "No one thought about the spoils. Excited by the memory of the carnage at Cenabum (present-day Orléans) and by the fatigue of the siege, they spared neither the old men, nor the women, nor the children." 

Only 800 of Avaricum's 40,000 inhabitants escaped the city alive. This mass slaughter, however, is questioned by some archaeologists, as is the significance of the fortifications. 

 Julius Caesar remained in Avaricum for some time, where his army found food and rest. As winter drew to a close, he prepared to launch a new military campaign. 

Vercingetorix was undeterred after the capture of Avaricum and succeeded in allying himself with new Gaulish peoples to fight against the Caesarian legions. 

 However, the Gallic Civil War intensified and threatened the very existence of Gaul.
