Summary of the previous part: The Roman army faced a horde of Gauls. The Romans were forced to retreat due to the sheer number of Gauls facing them!!!
As night fell, the Romans took cover behind their defensive lines...
The Pointed Advance (CUNEUM FORMATE): All cohorts formed a triangle in a pointed position. The point of the formation was facing the enemy.
Like
a pointed object that penetrates a wall, rather than a rectangular
object, the triangular advance allowed the lines to be broken through
and breached at several points.
The charge was preceded by a volley of missiles to weaken the advancing groups using catapults, scorpions, or javelins.
