Summary of the previous section: The Roman army faces a horde of Gauls.  

 

The horde is larger than expected, and the Romans decide to return to their defensive lines in the rear...

The Turtle Position (TESTUDO): The TESTUDO formed an impenetrable rectangular formation thanks to a "wall" and a "roof" of shields, like a tortoise curling up in its shell. 

While this formation could be used for a siege, it was primarily used to defend against enemy arrows and proved effective for retreating.
