The Spur Position (CUNEUS): The CUNEUS divided the cohorts into a convex semicircle with, at its center, a triangular point consisting of an elite group. Thus, the legion concentrated its efforts on a specific point, preferably in the middle of the enemy's front line.
This tactic often allowed the Romans to break through the enemy line and penetrate its formation, which usually proved fatal if the enemy had no reserves.
The Turtle Position (TESTUDO): The TESTUDO formed an impenetrable rectangular formation thanks to a "wall" and a "roof" of shields, like a tortoise curled up in its shell.
While this formation could be used for a siege, it was primarily used to defend against enemy arrows and was effective for retreating.
