Summary of the previous section: The Roman army is harassing a horde of Gauls.  

After several repeated assaults by small groups of Roman soldiers who broke away from the main body and attacked at specific points, the Romans began to gain the upper hand over the Gauls...

 

The Square or Rectangular Maneuver (QUADRATA /REGTANGULUM) : The Quadrata or Regtangulum maneuver allowed Roman infantry to move and form formations according to the orders of the centurions and decurions. This allowed these shapes to be quickly adapted by moving these squares or Rectangulars forward or backward.

 

The Saw Formation (SERRA): The SERRA, or saw formation, consisted of a succession of brief attacks and retreats, reminiscent of the saw movement.
