during the final years of Julius Caesar's reign.

Recap of the previous episode: Julius Caesar has just won the Battle of Thapsus in present-day Tunisia. The Roman general Metellus Scipio, commander of the Pompeian forces, and his ally Juba I, King of Numidia, died on the battlefield. General Titus Labienus, who commanded Scipio's cavalry, managed to escape. 

Cato, a supporter of Pompey who was stationed in the city of Utica—some distance from Thapsus—committed suicide upon learning of Caesar's victory, ensuring he would not be taken alive. 

This victory allowed Caesar to pacify the entire region of North Africa. He took advantage of a lull in the fighting to travel incognito to Alexandria and meet Cleopatra, so she could introduce him to their child: young Caesarion. 

 Meanwhile, Pompey's supporters and his two sons, Gnaeus Pompeius and Sextus Pompeius, took refuge in Hispania—modern-day Spain—to regroup and rebuild their forces against Caesar. 

For his part, Julius Caesar began celebrating his first three victories in Rome in early August 46 BC.
