PART 2 : The Arrival of Metellus Scipio's Army

Summary of the previous part: Julius Caesar has returned to Rome after winning the Battle of Zela. He met with representatives of the soldiers who had mutinied in Campania and succeeded in bringing them back under his command.

To test their loyalty, he decided they would accompany him in hunting down the renegades Cato and Metellus Scipio, who had taken refuge near Thapsus, a city on the coast of present-day Tunisia. Meanwhile, Caesar learned that Cleopatra had given birth to a son of his, whom she named Caesarion.

Caesar wished to see the child, but Cleopatra preferred that he complete his military campaign first, in order to protect Caesarion from his enemies. Shortly after receiving this news, Julius Caesar devised a plan to defeat his adversaries.

He prepared his army to reach Ruspina—a city near the Thapsus region—by late December, intending to harass Metellus Scipio’s forces through small, targeted attacks.
