* AGMEN: A Latin word meaning troop in general. It has a precise technical meaning in Roman military terminology. This word designated a marching column, with a specific order of march: an advance guard, followed by the allies, and then their baggage train.

Once the advance guard and its baggage train have departed, the Legions follow. The first Legion with its soldiers in front, then its baggage train, then a second Legion with the same configuration, and so on.

The cavalry moves because they are faster than the infantry. Sometimes they march behind the Legion to which they belong, sometimes they are deployed on the flanks of the convoy and stand ready to defend the AGMEN.

Each of the Legions or wings of the allies marches one day ahead of the other, behind which it is then positioned. Thus, by taking turns at the head of the column, all are equally entitled to benefit from the untouched water and forage.

The Romans employ a different marching order in dangerous circumstances, and when they find themselves on open ground. They form three parallel columns, placing the baggage train of the maniples, which march first, at the head of each, followed by the baggage train of the second group, and thus successively, according to the order just described, the baggage train and the maniples.

By regulating their marching order in this way, if an attack occurs, they turn left or right, deploying their troops outside the baggage train, on the side where the enemy is approaching. Then, the line infantry forms up for battle in a very short time and in a single movement.
