Part 1: THE DESERT GATE

 

The time: It is early 47 BC. 

Julius Caesar is in Alexandria, Egypt. The young Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII has refused Caesar's terms regarding his sister and wife, Cleopatra, who would rule Egypt with him. 

Caesar nearly became Pharaoh's prisoner and decided to overthrow him in favor of Cleopatra. 

Julius Caesar set fire to part of Alexandria and surrounded the rest of the city to prevent Pharaoh's escape. 

An Egyptian relief army arrives, led by the Egyptian General Achillas. 

Julius Caesar has been warned and knows where this army will pass to reach Alexandria: it must take the "Desert Gate", a small sandy valley south of the city. 

Julius Caesar has decided to confront this relief army there.
