Summary of the previous part: The fighting rages on the battlefield.
To protect his lines, Julius Caesar has brought in mobile catapults that have destroyed Pompey's war machines by hitting the first sections of Pompey's camp...
Caesar's cavalry reaches the second and third lines of Pompey's Triplex Acies.
Is this a turning point in the battle?
Or will Pompey's third line and Pompey's cavalry reform to regain the advantage?
The Spur Position (CUNEUS): The CUNEUS divided the cohorts into a convex semicircle with, at its center, a triangular point consisting of an elite group. Thus, the legion concentrated its efforts on a specific point, preferably in the middle of the enemy's front line.
This tactic often allowed the Romans to break through the enemy line and penetrate its formation, which usually proved fatal if the enemy had no reserves.
The Pincer Position (FORFEX): This took the opposite shape of the CUNEUS. A sort of V, except that the ends were closer together, reminiscent of a pincer movement.
One
of the maneuvers used to achieve this position was to slowly advance
the central line while the light infantry wings formed into columns and
advanced more quickly, before reforming in line until they surrounded
the enemy.
