Presented here are PLAYMOBIL dioramas depicting battles from the war between the British Army and the Zulus in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, during the 19th century.
The Battle of Isandlwana
January 22, 1879
An army of over 20,000 Zulus wiped out more than 1,700 British soldiers from the 24th Regiment of Foot near the hill of Isandlwana.
This would become the British Army’s greatest defeat in Africa.
The dioramas shown here, which depict this battle, were inspired by a 1979 film: *Zulu Dawn*.
In this video, you can see a diorama depicting this battle, featured at a 2019 PLAYMOBIL exhibition in Torrent.
And here is the ending of the 1979 film: ZULU DAWN.
The Battle of Rorke’s Drift
January 22–23, 1879
This battle followed the engagement at Isandlwana.
After the British defeat, 139 British soldiers entrenched themselves at the Rorke’s Drift mission station.
They were attacked by more than 4,000 Zulu warriors.
After over 12 hours of fighting, they succeeded in repelling every Zulu assault. This was the very location through which the British Army had entered the Zulu Kingdom on January 11, 1879.
The battle resulted in a defeat for the Zulu army, with over 350 Zulu deaths compared to 17 among the British.
This battle is also depicted in the 1964 film *Zulu*. Included here are several excerpts from that film:
The Battle of Gingindlovu
April 2, 1879
The British Army, having reorganized, drew in more than 12,000 Zulu warriors.
The British soldiers deployed cannons and Gatling guns.
The result was a slaughter for the Zulus, with more than 700 dead in their ranks, while on the British side, 11 deaths were recorded...
Subsequently, the Zulu army was pursued by British cavalry.
The Zulu army, led by the Zulu king, Cetshwayo, was defeated on July 4, 1879, at the Battle of Ulundi.
In this video, you can see the battle from which these images are taken.
