Summary of the previous part: Julius Caesar returned to Egypt because he had promised Cleopatra he would be present after Ptolemy XIII's 70 days of embalming and attend his funeral.
He attended the Horus ceremony in a temple near the Pyramid where Ptolemy was to be buried. After this solemn moment, the priests of Anubis placed the lid on his sarcophagus.
- END OF SEASON 3 -
A bit of history: Of the nearly 350 pharaohs identified during the almost 3,000 years of the pharaohs' reign, Egyptologists have identified five queens of ancient Egypt.
These women mostly assumed the status of queens of Egypt during periods of crisis or historical transition. This royal list includes: Neferusobek, Hatshepsut (known as Hatshepsut the Builder, who greatly contributed to the architectural and cultural prosperity of ancient Egypt), Meritaten, Twosret, and finally Cleopatra VII, probably the most famous of all the queens of ancient Egypt.
Daughter of Pharaoh Ptolemy XII, she reigned from 51 to 30 BC. Cleopatra VII ruled Egypt alongside her half-brother and husband, Ptolemy XIV, whom she poisoned in 44 BC to entrust the co-regency of the kingdom to her son, Ptolemy XV, also known as Caesarion, on the throne of Egypt.
Historical events would precipitate the fall of the Kingdom of Egypt. The reign of Ptolemy XV, like that of his mother Cleopatra VII, would remain in history books as the last of the pharaohs of ancient Egypt.
This fall of the pharaohs and their reign occurred during the Ptolemaic era, from 323 to 30 BC, when Egypt fell under Persian rule, and then under Alexander the Great, who installed one of his generals, Ptolemy I, on the throne of Egypt.
A period of considerable political instability, it marked the significant weakening of the Egyptian throne, shaken by constant betrayals, but also by its opening to the Mediterranean world.
Cleopatra VII remains particularly famous for her relationship with the Roman emperor Julius Caesar, who was likely, according to Egyptologists, the biological father of Ptolemy XV, also known as Caesarion.
Following Caesar's death, the Battle of Actium saw Octavian, the future emperor Augustus, triumph over Mark Antony and Cleopatra.
Mark Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide in 30 BC, while Octavian had Ptolemy XV executed.
Egypt then became a province of the Roman Empire, ending 3,000 years of pharaonic rule over ancient Egypt.
