The IZBAT Oasis

Part 1: The Mousetrap

The time: Julius Caesar asked Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII to agree to rule with his sister and wife, Cleopatra, as their late father had wished.

Ptolemy agreed, but three months later, Cleopatra still wasn't ruling.

When Julius Caesar returned to Alexandria, he decided to settle his dispute once and for all.

But the Pharaoh had gone to an oasis to rest.

Julius Caesar sent his general, Paulus Forticus, with about forty cavalrymen and eight Roman cohorts to bring him back to Alexandria.

* AGMEN: A Latin word meaning troop in general. It has a precise technical meaning in Roman military terminology. This word designated a marching column, with a specific order of march: an advance guard, followed by the allies, and then their baggage train.

The first Legion with its soldiers in front, then its baggage train, then a second Legion with the same configuration, and so on. The cavalry moved because they were faster than the infantry. Sometimes they marched behind the Legion to which they belonged, and sometimes they were deployed on the flanks of the convoy, ready to defend the AGMEN.
