- Episode 1: THE AMBUSH -

 
Part 2 : SURPRISE
 
Summary of the previous part: General Gaius Graccus's Legion arrives at a narrow canyon. He sends out scouts to see if there are any armed Gauls. 
They detect nothing. 
 
But shortly after their passage, Gauls silently emerge from caves hidden by vegetation. 
 
The scout leader returns to tell the General that he saw nothing suspicious. 
 
The General then decides to enter the canyon with his Legion...

The Defensive Circle Position (ORBIS): The ORBIS was a defensive circle maneuver that allowed troops to face the enemy wherever they were. 

It was only used in emergencies, against numerically superior armies or those with larger cavalry forces.

The Turtle Position (TESTUDO): The TESTUDO formed an impenetrable rectangular formation thanks to a "wall" and a "roof" of shields, like a tortoise curling up in its shell. 
While this formation could be used for a siege, it was primarily used to defend against enemy arrows and proved effective for retreating.
